Retail and wholesale companies rely heavily on the staff they employ. In the digital age, they encounter cyberthreats such as malware, the inappropriate use of IT infrastructure by staff, and the physical loss of devices or media containing sensitive data. While the malware threat can be effectively mitigated by up-to-date information security solutions, including security solutions for POS terminals, the only way to improve the IT security performance of staff is through regular cyber-awareness training.
Retail and wholesale companies operating in Japan and APAC often have to deal with incidents that occur within IT infrastructure hosted by third parties or during data exchange with their suppliers. Sometimes incidents involve cloud services as well. Therefore, it is recommended that these organizations invest in the latest IT security technologies and services, especially embedded systems protection, data center security and cloud security solutions. Setting aside part of their budget for a cybersecurity services contract is also a good idea.

*These statistics are based on results from an online survey of 5,266 business representatives from companies with 50 and up to 4,999 employees around the world, conducted in 2020 by Kaspersky and B2B International. Statistics based on less than 30 respondents should be used with caution, due to this being a low base. The significant increase in the IT security budget in 2020 may be caused by the change of the survey sample for several verticals and significant fluctuations in budgets in these verticals.
** The methodology for measuring endpoint protection has been changed: now it represents the penetration of endpoint protection in businesses meaning the proportion of corporate endpoints (both physical devices and virtual endpoints) that have endpoint security software installed in the average organization of this vertical and segment.
